I'm the leader of a tutor/mentor program in Chicago serving teens living
in
Cabrini-Green.  My organization also has formed a Tutor/Mentor
Connection,
which is linking nearly 300 tutor/mentor sites in the city with each
other
and with potential volunteers, donors and media.  We organize
conferences, a
volunteer recruitment campaign, a public awareness campaign and have
even
partnered with the Chicago Bar Association (22,000 members) to raise
general
operating dollars for one-on-one programs.

We've established an online tutor/mentor survey to help sort out the
different meanings used for the words tutor and mentor, and to identify
areas of common vision and/or concern where we might work together.  I

The fall volunteer recruitment campaign is next on our schedule.  The
Governor's wife has agreed to be the honorary chair and Jesse Jackson,
Cardinal George, Mayor Richard Daley along with actors Joe Mantegna
(Godfather III) and Dennis Franz (NYPD Blue) have already endorsed this
year's campaign.
