To All who may be interested:

I am writing to ask if your youth group would be willing to participate
in a chat room discussion with the youth from the organization for which
I am working at, the Institute for Community Research (ICR). Currently, I
am a summer intern for the National Teen Action Research Center (NTARC),
which is run by ICR. The ICR conducts a six-week Summer Youth Research
Institute (SYRI), which employs and trains youth, who conduct action
research about whatever topics they have chosen. This year, the theme of
the SYRI will be about advocacy and activism. If your teens would like
more information about youth programs run by ICR, they can access the web
site at www.teenactionresearch.org.

The general purpose for this chat room is for the following reasons:

   1. To encourage teens from ICR to talk with other teens in different
youth groups/organizations.
   2. To exchange ideas and information about community actions
concerning youth.
   3. To talk about their own youth projects.
   4. To talk about problems they have about being young adults in
today's society.
   5. To list goals they have for their organizations.
   6. To get more informationa about strategies for advocacy and how they
implemented those actions.

(Specific questions will be provided at a later date.)

The date of the chat room will be Monday, July 17th, 2000.
The time for talking on-line will be from 1:35 PM - 2:15 PM (Eastern
Standard Time).

Once I receive your confirmation, I will send you additional
information about the chat room location.

Also provided below is some information about the place where I work as
well as the program I am working under.

ICR Mission Statement
The Institute for Community Research is an independent, nonprofit
action research organization dedicated to using research to promote equal
access to health, education, and cultural resources in a diverse society.
To accomplish our mission, we collaborate with community and institutional
partners in research and development to improve services, fost individual
and community strengths, influence public policy, and contribute to social
science theory and practice.

NTARC Mission Statement
The National Teen Action Research Center (NTARC), a youth
component of the Institute for Community Research, conducts, supports, and
promotes teen directed adult supported action research. We offer hands-on
training opportunities for young people to explore and understand issues
of significance to themselves and to their communities, and plan
meaningful responses of public benefit. Our programs promote academic
learning, critical thinking, leadership, and civic responsibility.
