Hello everybody,
Thank you Masami, Victoria and Katie for your replies! (my name is
pronounced 'eenas')
I am sure very lucky to have gotten through to this extremely interesting
list.
Let me give a brief idea about (at least what "I" know) youth and technology
in Egypt. Though I must admit in advance that I am not all knowledgable in
this vast area.
As you might be aware, technology has been initiated in Egypt quite recently
(maybe some 5-7 yrs). However, and as the case is with technology
everywhere, it has been rapidly spreading and developing all through.
I think the main problems that we are facing in Egypt are not very different
from those that are being faced all over the world whether in developed or
developing countries (if I may use the term). They are bascially: easy
access, cheap access, and access for all.
I don't think that we have a problem with hardware or software. Our problem
lies mainly in what I like to call "humanware" (to quote an Egyptian friend
of ours). The problem is basically exposing and training people to not only
the USE but, more importantly, THE BEST AND FUNCTIONAL USE of technology. It
is here that the basic CHALLENGE lies.
In spite that it has a lot of other things to worry about like literacy,
poverty, etc....,the government is currently devoting a lot of effort in
trying to integrate technology in all areas; but I believe we have a long
way to go to reach out to other countries' rate of access, speed and
availability.

Thanks Ben for the info. I would like to ask a couple of questions:
1. Do you mean by "literacy" technology literacy or simply "reading and
writing"
2. Is this funding available for international organizations or not.
By the way, the link to the website did not work with me.

Victoria,
I know of a number of projects that do this: IEARN & GLOBE have links to
several schools here in Egypt. THINKQUEST also is very active and we are
having a big conference in November here in Egypt for the prize giving.
Of course, there might be more that I am not aware of.
However, as far as I am concerned, I have been extremely interested in
integrating technology in MY own curriculae and would be very much
interested to get my students or other groups of youth that I work with (out
of school) like scouts, or groups of young people from the Coptic Orthodox
Church, to join in projects of the sort, whether online or other.

Good Morning from Washington, DC. Let me introduce myself, my name is Katie
Gerne and I am the Adventure Clubs Program Coordinator at For Love of
Children (FLOC). I work with Inner city African American children between
the ages of 7-20. This summer we have an Adventure Camp in West Virginia
and an In-City camp at our facilities in Washington, DC. What I would like
is for my youth (ages 7-13) to email your youth. Let me know what you
think!
Peace and joy,
Katie Gerne.

Katie,
It's a pleasure to know you and hopefully cooperate with you.
My daughter happens to be organizing a Summer Camp of girls and boys to
prepare them to join the Scout. I think their age groups would be ideal for
your group.
Let me try to coordiante this with her, though it might be a bit difficult
due to lack of resources.
Inas
