Well!
YouthLearn is two weeks and old, and we've already established quite a
community! I just want to take a moment and summarize who we are and what
we have been talking about. As of today, YouthLearn is 265 members strong.
Subscribers come from across the country and across the world! Many of us
are working directly with youth and children in schools, after school
programs, libraries, museums and organizations. Others are from the
funding, academic, for profit, publishing or media worlds.
A number of questions and topics for discussion. Here's a few examples:
* One thing I would like to hear about from other subscribers is their
experiences with intergenerational programs, workshops, etc.--especially in
the context of learning about technology, learning to use the Internet
effectively, etc. What seems to work, and what doesn't?
(Denise Delgado, Bass Museum of Art, Miami, Florida)
* I am hoping to develop technology and computer activities that would be
not only entertaining, but educational. I am looking for ways to encourage
the students to develop their technology skills during the after school
program.
(Jodi Ost, Whittier Middle School, Sioux Falls, SD)
* We are always looking for new ways of involving youth in the education
process and ways to improve our programs.
(Cathy Wolf, Arizona Neighborhood Networks Partnership)
* I am very interested in information literacy issues as they pertain to
youth.
(Patrick Jones, Youth Services Coordinator for the Houston Public Library in
Texas.
* Soo if anyone has a project that they would like to collaborate with, let
me know and I will see if I can get a class that may be interested.
(Ruth Litman-Block, Cooperating School Districts in St. Louis, Missouri)
* I have 10 groups from Hartford that are interested in having conversations
with children via email from the cities in which they will be visiting this
summer. If you are interested, or if you know others that might be, please
pass this along.
(Janine M. Erhardt, LEAP, New Haven, Connecticut)
And of course many subscribers have introduced themselves, their
organizations and their programs.
A couple of housekeeping issues have come up:
* DIGEST version of YouthLearn -- our success can also be our greatest
challenge! Because of the (relatively) high volume of messages on
YouthLearn, some subscribers may want to switch to digest mode. With the
digest, you will receive all of the days messages in one message. It makes
for a long read, but some people like to receive fewer messages in their
inbox. You can switch your settings 3 different ways:
1. Go to the archives of the listserve and change your settings.
(http://listserv.morino.org/archives/youthlearn.html) The first time you go
to this Web page, you need to create a login and password. From here, you
can search the digest and change your settings.
2. You can also just send an email message to listserv at listserv.morino.org
In the email, leave the subject blank.
In the body of the message, write
set youthlearn nomime digest
This should change your subscription.
3. or just email Victoria (vvrana at morino.org) and ask nicely!
*Replying to messages -- When replying to messages on YouthLearn, make sure
and delete all the messages to which you are replying. Just leave any text
that is absolutely necessary for your reply to make sense. This makes the
digest much more readable.
YouthLearn is your community. Please let us know what we can do to make
this a productive place for knowledge exchange. We look forward to more
discussion!
Best,
