Hello Everyone!
Thank you for your introductions and posts! :o)
My name is Kallen Tsikalas. I am the Director of On-line Learning at
Computers for Youth, a NYC-based non-profit that provides underserved
children and families with home computers. Working with partners (thank you
NY Cares; I know youre also on this list!), we also provide training and a
technical support hotline, and we are in the process of developing content
FOR AND WITH the families we serve.
In such, I am co-leading a handful of intergenerational community technology
design teams. We are considering compensating our team-members (both
children and adults) for their work in designing and reviewing learning
resources.
Does anyone here have experience compensating young people (under age 15)?
Specifically, I am wondering about:
* Legal issues re: child labor?
* Appropriate types of compensation?
In terms of compensation, we are considering a variety of non-monetary
payments, e.g., educational software that the children would select; gift
certificates, savings bonds. Have you used others that have been
particularly well-received?
Please write to me or the listserv if you do have experience with this.
Thank you!

If all goes well...
We will take our childrens hands
so they may feel
protected and our gentleness
We will share our games
We will surrender our kisses
I will laugh
I will sing
I will complain of works hassles
Ill count my gray hairs
and until the very end
I will delight
in the adventure
of the sensation
of emotion
and thought.
