Compensating minors?

Kallen: When I was working as a tech coordinator at an East Harlem program,
I supervised teen lab assistants (over 15) and assistants-in-training
who were 13 and 14. The 13 and 14 year olds were paid a monthly stipend
(from October - May) and they were paid a total of $350. They were very
excited about getting a paycheck each month for about four hours/per
week of work and learning how to become lab assistants.

Gift cerificates and savings bonds are nice but a paycheck means so much
more to preteens. I still remember the look on their faces when they
found out they would be getting paychecks. I don't think they even cared
about the amount! The teen lab assistants were paid $6.50/hr for up
to 12 hours of work each week. They were part of the regular payroll
and they had loads of responsibilities that kept them motivated.

Adults can volunteer in exchange for access. They may appreciate the
gifts more, especially software and bonds.

Good Luck!
