Compensating minors?

Greetings Kallen:

When hiring youth under the age of 14, I follow the guidelines as described
in the D.C. SummerWorks Program (formerly SYEP). Teens 14 - 15 can only
work 3 hours per day. Our kids under the age of 14 are hired as volunteers.
While we have not done this at CPDC, in another agency I compensated those
kids with gift certificates to the Gap, Old Navy and AMC Theaters. They
really enjoyed the gifts, and it's my hope to do the same with our
volunteers at CPDC. I hope this helps. Good luck. Marion Brown

Subject: Compensating minors?

<p>Hello Everyone!

Thank you for your introductions and posts! :o)

My name is Kallen Tsikalas. I am the Director of On-line Learning at
Computers for Youth, a NYC-based non-profit that provides underserved
children and families with home computers. Working with partners (thank you
NY Cares; I know you're also on this list!), we also provide training and a
technical support hotline, and we are in the process of developing content
FOR AND WITH the families we serve.

In such, I am co-leading a handful of intergenerational community technology
design teams. We are considering compensating our team-members (both
children and adults) for their work in designing and reviewing learning
resources.

Does anyone here have experience compensating young people (under age 15)?
Specifically, I am wondering about:

       * Legal issues re: child labor?
       * Appropriate types of compensation?

In terms of compensation, we are considering a variety of non-monetary
"payments," e.g., educational software that the children would select; gift
certificates, savings bonds. Have you used others that have been
particularly well-received?

Please write to me or the listserv if you do have experience with this.
Thank you!

If all goes well...
We will take our children's hands
    so they may feel
    protected and our gentleness
We will share our games
We will surrender our kisses
I will laugh
    I will sing
I will complain of work's hassles
I'll count my gray hairs
    and until the very end
    I will delight
in the adventure
of the sensation
    of emotion
             and thought.
