JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
iMentor and the
Associated Medical Schools of New York
Science and Technology Program
PROGRAM CONSULTANT
iMentor (www.iMentor.org) and the AMS Science and Technology Program
(www.amsny.org) seek a consultant with experience in education and
technology to help develop an innovative youth development program.
The AMS Science and Technology Program is an after-school program that
prepares academically motivated high school students from underrepresented
minority groups for entry into post-secondary degree programs in scientific,
technical and health-related fields. The AMS program is operated in
partnership with ten New York State medical schools. This year, AMS will be
working with iMentor, a not-for-profit youth development agency that matches
young people from underserved communities with volunteer adult mentors based
on their shared career interests, and connects them via the Internet and
face-to-face meetings.
Building on a successful pilot project, the Program Consultant will help
iMentor and AMS develop a new project to match high school students
participating in the STEP program with volunteers from the medical
profession. These volunteers will coach students as they conduct research
on health careers that interest them and design web sites that present what
they have learned. This content will be included in iMentor's "Career
Center" career information web site for high school students, as well as in
the web site of the Associated Medical Schools of New York. Although
volunteers will meet students at a few face-to-face events, most
communication between volunteers and students will take place over email.
The goals of the project are to:
* Increase students' career awareness by matching students with
volunteer adult mentors who work in fields in which the students are
interested, and by implementing an innovative project-based curriculum that
teaches students more about careers and what it takes to achieve
professional success.
*
* Encourage students to pursue higher education in the fields of
health care, science, and technology.
*
* Address the "digital divide" by improving the technology literacy of
high school students of color.
*
* Promote youth mentoring by creating a fun, meaningful, yet very
flexible way for busy adults, especially adults from the medical profession,
to mentor youth interested in medical professions.
*
* Introduce students to the power of email and the World Wide Web as a
tool for communication and self-expression.
*
* Develop students' reading and writing skills.
*
* The consultant will:
*
* Visit the ten AMS Science and Technology Program sites in New York
State and meet with students, teachers and program administrators.
*
* Visit current iMentor programs in New York City and meet with
students and teachers.
*
* Design all aspects of the AMS Science and Technology Program/iMentor
project, including the project curriculum and program materials.
*
* Perform other necessary tasks as they arise, e.g., draft funding
proposals, conduct outreach to medical schools and other institutions, etc.
Time line:
By December 2000, Project Coordinator will have designed the project and
developed the curriculum so that the program can be implemented by the
Spring Semester.
Salary:
$35/hour
Up to 15 hours a week over 8 weeks.
