While the subject is fund-rising, I'd like to encourage members of the list to visit the www.tutormentorconnection.org web site and review the workshops being offered at the November 9th and 10th Tutor/Mentor Leadership Conference, being held at the Holiday Inn Mart Plaza in Chicago. You'll see that all of these deal with improving capacity and quality and some are specific to marketing and fund raising..

We continue to keep the fees for this conference as low as possible ($70 for two days if you register before 10/25) so that small and mid size program leaders can attend regularly for continuous learning and network-building.

This year we'll add a Nov. 9th Tutor/Mentor Recognition Dinner. All who register for both days, or for the Thursday session have the fee for the dinner included in your registration. You can also register for the dinner separately. Paul Vallas, CEO of Chicago Public Schools, will be one of the speakers. The goal of the dinner is to increase the public's attention on ALL of the various tutor/mentor programs operating in each of our cities. By doing this six weeks prior to the year-end charitable period our goal is to increase each agency's own ability to raise private dollars through year-end fund raising appeals. These dollars bring flexibility to programs beyond public money and are essential.

If you visit the www.tutormentorconnection.org site you'll also see that the Conference and Dinner are part of a joint effort with the Chicago Bar Association to raise visibility, dollars and volunteers for tutor/mentor programs at this time of the year. The CBA and its Foundation are partnerhing with the T/MC to make the week of the Conference a Tutor/Mentor Week. One of the major events is a benefit organized by the CBA/CBF and targeting the legal community. More than 1000 are expected to attend a November 4th Benefit, with half the funds raised being awarded to one-on-one Chicago tutor/mentor programs during the May 2001 conference. Every city/state has a bar foundation and other professional associations which could duplicate this effort.

Our goal is that other communities will duplicate these efforts and will form their own Tutor/Mentor Week campaigns on the same dates and for the same purposes as we do in Chicago. As we're all singing the same music at the same time we'll create more powerful music and generate greater public response to each of our cities and each of our youth agencies.
