MANAGER OF EDUCATION PROGRAMS
New York Cares, a non-profit organization founded in 1987, coordinates
and develops volunteer programs to involve caring New Yorkers in
community service. Every month, more than 2,000 New York Cares
volunteers work in teams to provide hands-on community service to over
300 community based service organizations and city agencies. New York
Cares education programs strive to improve educational opportunities
for youth and adults by leveraging volunteer, community and corporate
resources to support public and parochial schools, community centers,
transitional housing facilities, and other non-profit organizations.
Through innovative hands-on service programs, volunteers provide
one-on-one or group assistance to children and adults throughout the
city.
Responsibilities
The Manager of Education Programs coordinates, develops, manages, and
evaluates New York Cares 40+ educational and tutorial programs that
serve youth and adults. These programs include tutorials for
school-aged children, SAT and Regents preparation programs, ESL and
adult education initiatives, and more. Program management entails:
scheduling and planning creative and well-organized education programs
that capitalize on the time and talents of teams of individual
volunteers and of corporate groups; developing and maintaining strong
and collaborative partnerships with New York Cares Project Partner
agencies (transitional housing facilities, public & parochial schools,
and other community and city agencies); conducting site visits to
agencies and current projects; supporting and training volunteer
project leaders; developing curriculum as needed for trainings and
tutorials; conducting volunteer trainings and orientations; evaluating
programs; writing descriptions of programs for publications; and
keeping accurate database records of all service programs. Finally,
the Manager of Education Programs will be involved on an as-needed
basis in organization-wide initiatives such as Annual Events and
volunteer orientation. New York Cares volunteer projects, trainings,
and events take place before and after work and on weekends.
Therefore, the Manager is expected to work several evenings per month
and occasional weekends in order to visit and assess programs.
Qualifications
- Bachelors Degree
- At least two years of relevant professional experience, especially
program development/ management experience, and/or
teaching/educational experience
- Some knowledge of current educational philosophy and thinking
- Strong organizational and administrative skills, including an
ability to manage many projects simultaneously and to set priorities
- Ability to listen to and communicate effectively with agency
contacts, volunteers and staff;
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a
team;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
- Volunteer experience, and a commitment to community service.
