Due to popular demand, the Corporation for National Service, in cooperation
with the U.S. Department of Education, is launching a new listserv for
people interested in issues concerning implementing America Counts tutoring
programs. While there are many similarities between setting up a reading
and a mathematics tutoring program, the goal of this listserv is to help
address the specific challenges in tutoring the subject of mathematics that
so many kids unnecessarily struggle with and that ALL kids need to succeed!
The new listserv will officially begin Wednesday October 4th. Subscribe now
to ensure that you are signed on when the conversation officially starts on
Wednesday!
Please see below for instructions on how to join the America Counts
listserv.
Here are some reasons to join the America Counts listserv:
... Every year a student decides not to take a math class in high school,
their career options are cut in half. These decisions are shaped by
students' experiences with math in all the grades leading up to high school.
... On the Third International Mathematics and Science Study, among the 20
nations assessed in advanced mathematics, none scored significantly lower
than the United States.
... On the 1996 National Assessment of Educational Progress, less than
one-third of U.S. Students in grades 4, 8, and 12 performed at or above
"Proficient" achievement level.
... Just as ALL children can learn to read, ALL children can learn
mathematics.
These are just some of the reasons that President Clinton and Secretary
Riley have made student achievement in mathematics one of the seven
priorities of the U.S. Department of Education and why the America Counts
Tutoring Program and a waiver of match for Federal Work Study students
tutoring children elementary through ninth grade was created in 1999.
In its first year alone, over 500 post-secondary institutions have signed up
to participate in America Counts.
