Please share the following with anyone whom you feel would like to take
advantage of this offer to obtain books for children at a very low cost of
shipping charges only (25 cents a book).
================================================================
First Book, a national nonprofit organization that provides free books
to low-income children, recently announced that programs serving
low-income children are eligible to apply for a grant of free books as a
part of First Book's Make A Difference Day (OCTOBER 28) celebration.
Co-sponsored by USA Weekend and the Points of Light Foundation, Make A
Difference Day is the nation's largest day of volunteering and brings
millions of people together to "make a difference" in their communities
each year. This year, First Book has joined forces with nationally
acclaimed artist and entrepreneur Mary Engelbreit to distribute more
than 250 tons of books to hundreds of thousands of children.
First Book is a program whose primary goal is to work with
community-based literacy programs around the country to distribute new
books to children who, for economic reasons, have little or no access to
books
of their own. On the morning of Make A Difference Day, teams of volunteers
will join First Book's national office, Mary Engelbreit Studios, the
U.S. Coast Guard, and the country's leading children's publishing houses to
distribute over 1 million books to children across the country. As with
all books distributed by First Book, books given away on Make A Difference
Day will be free to both the children and programs supported by First
Book--programs will need pay only for the cost of shipping at
First Book's discounted rate. Programs within driving
distance of St. Louis (the host city of First Book's Make A Difference
Day celebration) are also welcome to pick up books in person so as to avoid
paying a shipping charge. Programs are eligible to apply for up to five
books per child served.
