CNET AND TECH SOUP JOIN FORCES
Delivering tech resources tailored to non-profit sector for the first time
SAN FRANCISCO, CA - December 7, 2000 - CNET, a division of CNET Networks,
Inc. (Nasdaq: CNET), and TechSoup.org, a website powered by CompuMentor,
today announced the launch of a strategic partnership to deliver technology
resources and reviews directly to the nonprofit sector. The partnership of
these two respected online resources matches CNET Network's global
leadership in technology-related information with CompuMentor's twelve
years of expertise serving the nonprofit sector with technical assistance.
Together, CNET and TechSoup address the fundamental needs of nonprofits and
help bridge the digital divide by assisting this time starved, often
technologically-naive sector to access the full power of Web-based
resources when making technology purchasing decisions and seeking technical
advice and support.
"CNET uniquely understands the need for timely, unbiased information to
help businesses buy and use technology to their advantage," said Karen
Wood, Vice President of Corporate Relations for CNET Networks. "We are
thrilled to be working hand-in-hand with TechSoup to make technology
information accessible to nonprofits, in hopes that it will enable them to
more effectively serve the communities they are targeting.
"For the first time ever, CNET has teamed with a noncommercial entity to
provide targeted information to increase the technical expertise of a
particular sector. Through this collaboration, the wealth of CNET's
resources is now better able to support the nonprofit sector directly. This
combined resource will help the nation's social services agencies become
more confident in using technology to accomplish their missions. Intimately
aware of the lag in technological expertise in the nonprofit sector,
CompuMentor created TechSoup.org out of the express need for information
that would speak to a non-technically savvy audience. Using its nonprofit
expertise, TechSoup created a gateway into CNET's comprehensive resources
that brings relevant and timely information to nonprofit professionals.
"TechSoup users will be able to access up-to-date information on hardware,
software, web building, networking, databases, and Internet connectivity,"
according to Sandra Whisler, TechSoup Director. "This information takes the
form of articles, downloads, news feeds, and links, as well as CNET's
highly acclaimed product reviews. TechSoup users will also be able to take
advantage of CNET's database of technical support information."
In CompuMentor's President and founder, Daniel Ben-Horin's words, "TechSoup
is now able to increase its capacity to serve the employees of the hundreds
of thousands of small to mid-size nonprofits in the nation by leveraging
CNET's deep technical expertise and information base."By engaging
TechSoup's intimate connection with and knowledge of nonprofits' needs,
CNET has acquired a direct line to a new market - the nonprofit sector.
