Think Detroit is more well-known for the athletic leagues it sponsors for
the city's underprivileged children. But it also offers classes that teach
kids -- and grown-ups -- the ABCs of PCs and the Internet. Later this
month, the organization will start training children in refurbishing old
computers -- an effort that will give kids the skills they'll need to join
the workforce of tomorrow and narrow the digital divide.... Think
Detroit's plans already have the backing and blessing of the city, General
Motors Corp., technology entrepreneur trade group DigitalDetroit, Web
development firm Cobalt and Focus:Hope, the venerated Detroit-based charity
that feeds the needy and offers job training. In September, the automaker's
business-to-consumer e-commerce unit eGM said it was donating $3 million
over three years to support the nonprofit's computer program. Think Detroit
plans to use the money to recruit more instructors and upgrade its
classrooms.
