Technology Donations

Hi Tracy --
I'm catching up on my emails today!

Did you get any response to your question regarding contacts for donations
of laptops?

I see you're in the Washington DC area. Here's a link to the Lazarus
Foundation, which says on its home page "If you are a non-profit and need a
computer... we have a computer to donate to you!"
http://www.west.net/~recycle/lazarus/

Here is an article on YouthLearn you might want to look at. It talks about
recycled and donated equipment and provides links to relevant organizations.
http://www.youthlearn.org/techno/equipment.cfm

The following article on techsoup.org talks about the hardware donation
programs of 3Com, Compaq, HP, and IBM.
http://www.techsoup.org/articlepage.cfm?topicid=1&topic=Hardware&articleid=2

The above article and this one below seem to discourage nonprofits from
seeking donated equipment. "The bottom line is that unless you have
connections at a computer company or foundation, the amount of work / time /
money involved in trying to get a small number of computers donated may
outweigh the amount you would spend buying them outright."
http://www.techsoup.org/qod_answer.cfm?qotdid=12

<p>I'm curous what you folks on YouthLearn think. Have you had good/bad
experiences with donated equipment? Do you think its better to get
refurbished equipment rather than what's been donated outright? Please post
comments and opinions to the list.

Thanks,
Pam
