NEWS

1. Univ California Begins Computer-Based After School Pilot

"The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and Cal-SOAP (California
Student Opportunity and Access Program) have joined with Gompers Secondary
School… in a pilot program that exposes Gompers seventh graders to intensive
computer-based instruction in science and math after school. The program…
also uses computer technology to link participating students with math and
science tutors and mentors at UCSD through live video connections known as
web cams… The effort is made possible through a $30,000 grant from the
Verizon Foundation." [San Diego Daily Transcript, Feb 15]

2. AYPF Report Highlights Successful Youth Programs

A report from the American Youth Policy Forum analyzed 95 youth initiatives
and found 20 models of excellence for what works in both school and
out-of-school programs to improve academic achievement of young people. The
report includes program evaluations and describes five key approaches that
make a difference: high expectations for youth, programs and staff;
personalized attention to students; innovative structure or organization;
hands-on learning activities; and long-term support. [Connect for Kids

3. ACC Conducts Online Panel on Workforce Development

The America Connects Consortium recently concluded the second in a series of
online panels on topics of interest to community technology centers. The
panel, which focused on workforce development, explored how CTCs are engaged
in recruiting and training people for jobs that require information
technology skills. Panelists included: David Dearden, ICF Consulting;
Darlene Van Every, Information Technology Association of America; Josh
Kirschenbaum, PolicyLink; Laura Yasuda, Plugged In Enterprises; Paul Lamb,
StreetTech; Michael Smith, Baltimore Urban League; Joe Hawkins, OpNet; Tina
Berger, Smartforce; Will Reed, Technology for All; Michael Margolis,
CitySkills; and Ken Komoski, The LINCT Coalition. You can read what the

GRANTS AND AWARDS

4. Pentair Foundation's Upcoming Grants Deadlines

Application deadlines for grants from the Pentair Foundation are Mar 1, Jun
1 and Oct 1, with notification made about two months later. The mission of
The Pentair Foundation is to "enrich and advance the communities in which
Pentair operates by funding local programs that promote education,
vocational readiness, cultural understanding, self-sufficiency, and general
well-being so that people in these communities benefit by our presence."
Headquartered in Minnesota, Pentair operates from more than 50 locations in

5. Stockholm Challenge Award 2001 Deadline is April 1

You can nominate youth programs that integrate technology for an
international award called the Stockholm Challenge, which aims to highlight
initiatives that "focus on the positive effects of today's information
society... The Stockholm Challenge rewards projects that through
inspirational approaches benefit people, society and the environment in
their local context." The entry form is short and there is a category for
education.

6. Free Course on "Proposal Writing Basics"

The Foundation Center is now offering a new, free, full-day course on
proposal writing at its five offices: Atlanta, Cleveland, New York, San
Francisco, and Washington, DC. Registration has started for the March and
April classes. "Designed for new proposal writers representing nonprofit
organizations, this introductory overview instructs participants in the key
components of a proposal to a foundation or corporation and responds to the
questions first-timers often have about the process of applying for a
