Hello all,
You might want to take a listen to National Public Radio this week during
Morning Edition, at around 7:45am -- they are doing a series on literacy.
What is literacy, how can it be taught, and how do new technologies affect
the need to teach critical thinking skills? For today's broadcast (see
summary below), go to the NPR Web site, where they have already put up a
RealAudio link:
http://www.npr.org/programs/morning/features/2001/mar/010319.literacy.html.
This page also summarizes the upcoming reports for the rest of the week.
Literacy in the 21st Century
Monday, March 19
What does it mean to be literate today? What is literacy? NPR's Margot Adler
asks several teachers and scholars to define their version of, and vision
of, literacy in our time. Does literacy include knowing about the
increasingly diverse cultures that influence life in our schools and cities?
Does it included knowing how to surf the Web? Some say it still means having
a core of knowledge based on the tried-and-true classics that many of us
grew up with. Adler asks: how do we reconcile the wisdom of the past with
the needs of the future?
