One valuable tool to inform the development of business/strategic plans is =
Peter Drucker's book--The Five Most Important Questions you will ever ask =
about your Nonprofit Organization--which can be used in many ways with =
staff, board, etc. It's published by Jossey Bass.

Keith,

A former colleague of mine created a business plan for an organization
that combined youth development work with a content development
Internet venture. This group sought funding from both forprofit
groups and traditional nonprofit funding sources (principally
foundations).

The difficulty in obtaining examples of these types of documents
may be that first, in some instances (as in the case of my colleague),
business plans that are produced are considered the property of the group
and are not available for public distribution; and second, that
in many instances nonprofit groups focused on youth development
are not producing business plans because they must prepare funding
proposals and planning documents that meet the requirements of
government funding sources and foundations.

As more funds are made available through venture philanthropy
groups and other private funding sources, there should (hopefully)
be more concrete incentives and requirements for nonprofits to produce
business plans.

The situation for many of the biggest youth groups still seems to
be that government remains their single largest funding source--even
for groups that regularly receive funds from foundations and individual
donors. Funding reports for many nonprofits can be
found on Guidestar. http://www.guidestar.org=20

If this is at all helpful, the components of my colleague's business
plan are listed below.
