Hello Youth-Learn...! Happy 2002! :O)
There's great stuff happening this month of January 2002 in the USA! Check
out what is going on nationally, and in your local communities... If you
are able to, or are already contributing toward local initiatives in your
community and in touch with national events & initiatives - then Right
On... If not, there are other ways to get involved (this includes
opportunities abroad)!

and helped you become who you are today? Thank them. And pass it on!"
"Who Mentored You?"

The Harvard Mentoring Project, an initiative of the Harvard School of
Public Health, has announced the launch of the first annual National
Mentoring Month a large-scale public service campaign (with the National
Mentoring Partnership) to recruit volunteer mentors for children who are at
risk of not leading healthy, productive lives. The campaign will run
throughout January each year.
----
An easy way to "thank your mentors and pass it on" would be to contribute
to a very special issue of the MentorGirl Voice. Since Spring 2001, I have
been collecting very terrific essays and role model highlights from special
folks 'round the globe and here in our own SF Bay Area backyard!
This is how I am doing my part and getting involved with the National
Mentoring Month initiative. If you have something to share, tell our
readership about your experience with mentors and role models that have
helped shaped who you are today. If you are a mentor or educator
currently, share with us the impact you are making, and who has inspired
and encouraged you to become a mentor... If you are involved in community
outreach in any manner, please tell us about it! The goal of this special
issue of the MentorGirl Voice is to help spread the word about how
important role models are to our young people, as well as peer mentoring
between adults. This includes technology related mentoring, as well as
'traditional' mentoring; with an emphasis toward our girls, teen girls, and
women - but not exclusively!
We've got more than a handful of wonderful and inspirational essays to
share; but I thought I'd give a shout out just in case there are others in
our various communities who would like to contribute. I am very proud of
this issue of the MentorGirl Voice, and even if you don't have time to
contribute this time around - I'd like to share the fruits of labor of
myself, and those who have graciously sent in their stories, essays, and
program announcements...!
The potential readership of the Voice for Jan 2002 is upwards of 10,000
folks (likely more than this, as most folk seem to enjoy passing my
newsletter around!). And, to assist in reaching this goal and surpassing
it, I will also be doing a press release (maybe!), and additional PR
networking with National Mentoring Month affiliated press, partners, and so
forth. Any suggestions are helpful, if you are in the 'know'. It's rather
unusual to be doing something exclusively online, for events such as this,
but I am reveling in the joy of producing something unique to support and
inspire others to get involved and realize the potential of youth and peer
mentoring, online volunteering, etc. etc. I would like to broaden our
readership of the MentorGirl Voice as far as possible in support of (while
helping to help expand) the initiatives of National Mentoring Month!
Deadline for submissions is Tuesday, 15 Jan 2002 12noon, PST. Please keep
entries at about 500 words or less, and I do reserve the right to make
edits as appropriate since the anticipated publish date is right around the
corner!
Thank you in advance, I hope you'll keep a lookout for our Winter issue of
the MentorGirl Voice at <http://www.mentorgirls.org> set to publish on
Wednesday, 16 Jan 2002. And, you can subscribe to our newsletter by
sending a BLANK email to: MentorGirls-Newsletter-subscribe at topica.com
Warm regards,
and have a prosperous National Mentoring Month! woo!
