I have just joined the youthlearn mailing list. I am the project director
for the Montana High School/High Tech program, which is a newly funded
pilot project working to expose youth aged 16-21 to careers in the field of
technology. Our project has two components. First is a series of basic
computer skills classes held in one of the computer labs on the campus of
Montana State University-Billings. Classes cover a variety of subjects
inlcuding basic computer functioning, Windows, Word, Excel, Front Page,
Power Point, minimal exposure to some graphics design. In addition, there
are field experiences that focus on career exploration opportunities---site
visits, job shadowing, and internships---in businesses utilizing various
levels of technology. We are also doing a bit of formal career exploration
via standard inventories.
