Hi youthlearn,
This is a response to Jamie Piskator's questions about his science
in the Everglades project and a more general idea of what one Boys & Girls
Club is doing here in southwestern Oregon. We have a wonderful
service-learning project going which is a collaboration between our Clubs,
schools, and forest agencies. Point one - many agencies, from Forest
Service to Bureau of Land Management to Soil and Water Conservation
councils, have some funds to provide staff or equipment for outdoor
activities in their managed lands. We just found funding from a combination
of private foundation grants, state Commission for Children and Families
dollars, and a major federal grant to counties hammered by the reduced cut
in federal forests. We also have corporate sponsorship and large in-kind
gifts of equipment. Our members will be involved in diverse projects,
including community tree-planting in riparian zones, constructing signage
for a children's forest, adopting forest lands for restoration, as well as
trail building in state parks. Integrated into these projects will be
learning modules, with hands-on being the operative theme.
Funding these days means putting together a diversified set of proposals
tailored to different kinds of funders, from private to public agency.
Don't forget the agencies - they think they're poor, but if you can find a
kindred spirit inside, lots of resources can become available.
