Hello,
It sounds like you have the beginnings of a great service-learning project.
Check out the National Service-Learning Exchange at http://lsaexchange.org/
for information. The Service-Learning Exchange is a peer mentor system set
up to provide technical assistance to service-learning programs around the
country. Check out the site and see if you think this is helpful. There
may have been someone who has done something similiar to what you're doing
so you won't have to reinvent the wheel!

Subject: MATH/SCIENCE SUMMER PROGRAM FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS
I am currently in the process of putting together a math and science summer
program for middle school girls. My goal is to pilot the program this year
and have it up and running by the summer of 2003.
The focal point of the project will be saving the coral reefs of the
Florida Keys. The students will be kayaking in the mangroves to learn
about symbiotic relationships and the interconnectedness of the mangroves
and the coral reefs. They will snorkel on the coral reefs to observe the
current destruction, as well as perform mathematical computations to
determine the percentage of destruction, taking water samples, etc.
Does anyone have any experience putting together anything like this...I
could use all the help I can get...funding, experiences, etc.
The camp will take place in Key West, Florida...my target area is girls who
are economically disadvantaged...so any information on funding would be
very helpful.
Thank You,
Jamie L. Piskator
