The Institute for the Study of Digital Inclusion
(www.stetson.edu/digitalinclusion) has a program called "Make It-Take It"
that works with schoolchildren in underserved communities: urban, rural,
multicultural, etc. The project teaches them build computers and use office
applications effectively. Upon graduation from the program, each student is
given the computer he or she built. Parents are getting involved and
excited. Children are seeing concrete images of what their futures can be
and are learning to mentor other students.
The Institute is holding its annual conference "Digital Inclusion Symposium
2002" (www.stetson.edu/digitalinclusion/symposium.shtml) on May 30th in
Celebration, Florida (near Disney). Dr. Frederick S. Humphries, President
and CEO, National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education and
Former President, Florida A&M University and Clarence Anthony, Mayor of
South Bay, Florida and Past President of the International, National, and
Florida Leagues of Cities will be the keynote speakers. Issues addressed
will include Education's Social Responsibility: K-12 and Higher Education,
Public Policy: Framework for addressing Digital Inclusion, and Closing the
Digital Divide in Underserved Communities. Please register and join us for
this exciting and dynamic event by visiting
http://www.stetson.edu/digitalinclusion/registration.shtml.
The primary focus of the Institute for the Study of Digital Inclusion is to
draw on our strengths as faculty, researchers, and teachers to gather
adequate scientific data to validate our hypothesis that access to the
Internet and enabling technologies within households in underserved
communities will significantly increase academic achievement and result in
an improved quality of life socioeconomically.
