Hello,
My name is David Alkins, Exec. Dir. of DARI (Developing Attitude Respect &
Intellect ). We are a nonprofit agency that has been developing and
implementing project based learning programs for community based
organizations (robotics, multimedia movie production, newsletters, web page
design, cultural cookbooks, etc.). Recently, one of our sites in a public
housing developments was closed (March 31, 2002) as part of a citywide
cancellation of all youth services in 14 public housing developments in
Boston. Seeing the need, our organization negotiated management of the
center through the close of the school year in June 2002. What is needed
now is to identify any type of (emergency) funding for a summer program at
this late date. The median income for our population is only $9800,
therefore, there are few extra dollars to support fees. We are engaged in
a State licensing program that will provide access to reduced fees for
residents. We serve over 65 youths at the center. We are better able to
elicit funding for the Fall programs, however, for the summer which is a
crucial time for our kids to be occupied constructively, we may be unable
to serve our clients.
The abrupt cancellation of services by the public housing authority has
created a void in service delivery for the most neglected population.
Therefore, I would like to does anyone know of any funding streams that may
be accessed for our immediate need? I would appreciate any advise
regarding our current dilemma.
Thanks for the support...David Alkins
