Hello YouthLearn-
I hope that all of you are safe, and coping well with the anniversary of
September 11th. I wanted to share with you some projects that have come
out of young people's experiences with events of September 11th. The first
is a compilation video by Listen Up! and the second is an online panel from
AT&T Young Leaders, a program by America Connects Consortium. In the midst
of so much uncertainty and chaos, there have been threads of hope and
strength. These are what the following two projects epitomize to me... I
invite you all to share projects that have been developed by your young
people, after September 11th, or the anniversary.
Take care-
Monica

**[ListenUp is] excited to announce a video called "9-11: A Call for
Tolerance and Understanding" which will be screened at dozens of schools
and community centers across the country.
It is an hour-long compilation videotape that explores the complex issues
of a post September 11th world: race, religion, social inequity,
consumerism, poverty and violence. Through media production, youth from the
Listen Up! Network explore what has kept people and nations apart for so
long and how to find peaceful ways to come together. Copies of the tape
have been made available for organizations within the network to hold
public screenings in communities and schools. For more information or to
screen some of the work, go to: listenup.org/tolerance/. [ListenUp]

**What did young leaders from CTCs say last year in the immediate aftermath
of the tragic events of September 11th?These two observations are drawn
from the September 2001 ACC Online Youth Leaders Panel Discussion.

"The role for youth is to be strong. Have faith, hope, and have god in our
hearts. The youth can try to comfort and help the people after the
devastating catastrophe. We can send e-mails to people and have them pray
for all the people that died and pray for hope for more survivors. At my
school, I'm in a club and we're going to do something to help the people in
New York and the Pentagon. We're not really sure how, but we have a few
ideas. (We'll try our best.) Youth can try to have people donate blood at
their hospitals, wear the U.S. flag to show your patriotism, raise money
for donations and give it to the people in New York and the Pentagon. There
are a lot of things to do and honestly I'm not sure which would be best,
but you can only do what you can do to help others get over this tragedy."

"I am 16 and have worked on Peace Making activities for a long time. May I
encourage the rest of the kids to really take a stand. Print out flyers for
cars - God Bless America. Make sure you find the students in your school
that happen to be Muslim. Make friends with them, befriend them, go to
their Mosque with them. Show them that religious intolerance is not
accepted. Check out the recent Junior Journal off of <
http://www.y2kyouth.org> where a 16 year old Pakistani girl and I have met
to talk about the attacks. Get informed. Bin Laden wants us to hate Muslims
and make this a Holy War. Let the youth of the nation show the rest of the
world that this is stupid. We can do more than most people and kids think.
One child can educate a whole village, I have seen it."
