There is a great resource that we utilize for e-mentoring called
icouldbe.org. They have on-line mentors in virtually every career area all
across the country and some even in other countries. It is a non-profit,
they charge only $40 per student to enroll them in the program, and they
provide free training, a manual, and both a disk and CD with all of the
information re: utilizing the system, how to help youth get the best out of
it, etc. Contacts can be made whenever and as often as a youth wants, on
their own, as well as part of a structured program. We are going to use it
as part of a career exploration course, but then the youth can contact the
mentors whenever they want. What impressed me about it was the
safety/security system they have set up. The mentoring can only be done
through their monitored system. There is no way inappropriate
conversations or contacts can occur. They also
issue a report showing how many contacts had been made per individual, etc.
