Dear YouthLearn subscribers:
My best wishes to you all in the New Year! Here's hoping that it brings
new discoveries and opportunities! In that spirit, The YouthLearn
Initiative is thrilled to announce that we are one of the national
organizations that will be working with the Beaumont Foundation of America
to help facilitate donations of new Toshiba-branded computers and other
hardware to community technology efforts. The Foundation will be
distributing approximately $350 million in computers and related equipment
to schools, community organizations and individuals over the next four
years, and we know that many of you in the YouthLearn Community are ideal
candidates for these grants. Awards will range from $20,000-$200,000 each
and will be provided in the form of new equipment. There is a fact sheet
on the grant from the Beaumont Foundation at:
http://www.bmtfoundation.org/grants/?index=1
As detailed there, organizations in 21 states and the District of Columbia
will be eligible to apply for equipment in 2003 and again in 2005, with
applications accepted in 2004 and 2006 from organizations in the other
states. The states eligible in 2003 are Alabama, Alaska, California,
Colorado, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas,
Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Oregon,
South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia and Wyoming.
Applications will be accepted from January 6 to March 31 and applicants are
encouraged to submit their online proposal and supporting documents early
during that time frame. Guidelines are currently available on the Beaumont
website. We are especially pleased to note that the YouthLearn Guide and
our online database of educational websites has been listed as a program
reference in the Beaumont Community Grant Guidelines:
http://www.bmtfoundation.org/grants/2003GGCommunity.php
YouthLearn is collaborating especially closely with the following
organizations in an attempt to assist truly innovative and excellent
community technology programs in making successful applications: The
Alliance for Technology Access; The Aspira Association, Inc; Communities in
School; The Community Technology Centers' Network (CTCNet); The CTC VISTA
Project; League of United Latin American Citizens; NAACP; National Council
of La Raza, Inc.; and National Urban League, Inc. Beaumont will be giving
special consideration to affiliates of these organizations in the grant
review process. Next week we will be providing interested applicants a
code that they can reference on their application noting that they are
members of the YouthLearn community.
If you are interested in applying for one of the equipment grants, we
encourage you to notify the YouthLearn staff by sending us a message with
your name, email address, organization name and contact information to
info at youthlearn.org. Please use "Beaumont Foundation equipment grants" as
the subject line. We will keep you updated with information about the grant
program.
Best,

<p>Beaumont Foundation of America Background Information
"Established as part of a historic $2.1 billion nationwide class action
lawsuit, the Beaumont Foundation of America is an extraordinary example of
how the civil justice system can make a difference. Three Texas lawyers
conceived on an ingenious approach to create the Foundation, which will use
approximately $350 million in unclaimed funds to provide state-of-the-art
technology equipment to underserved schools, communities and individuals in
all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The hope is that the unique
circumstances under which the Foundation was created will serve as a model
for similar settlements and give rise to a new form of philanthropy."
