<p>hi lora -

i'm a fan of some multimedia storytelling software called
"liveslideshow" (for mac and windows.)
it lets you create narrated quicktime slideshows for putting up on
the web. it's relatively inexpensive ($50) and not very difficult to
learn. http://www.liveslideshow.com you can download a free demo.

some quicktimes i created with liveslideshow can be seen at
http://storymakers.net/massey.mov
(663 kilobytes) and http://storymakers.net/tuckermusic.mov (1.6 megabytes)

if you don't have quicktime on your computer you can download it
for free from http://www.apple.com/quicktime/

        hope this helps,

btw, a good place to find the best prices on digital cameras is
http://dealcam.com

The 12-02 Harvard Bus Rev article by Mike Porter and Mark Kramer has a
great summary of Cisco's web learning program for IT network
administrators with 260,00 students worldwide that may be helpful.

Hello Lora,

I am the director of a creative technology program for the boys and girls
club in nyc. I do ahve a few suggestions for you regarding setting up a
lab. I find that Macs are much friendlier and great for creative digital
media, if you have to go with PC, pentium 4's will give the most latitude.
include in this hardware CD Writers/burners and DVD capability. Software
to start: Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Premiere(video
editing) and Pagemaker. Sound software-
ACid Pro 3, Mixman Studio. All of this software is great for young people
to learn some basics and enable them to actualize their ideas not to
mention be inpressed by the quality of the product. Professional
mentors/volunteers are great to teach some of the more advanced elements
of the software. We've found that projects like self portraits (video and
collages) and designing ads are great to get them started. For the younger
kids, software like Kidpix and Face Factory are fun ways to get aquainted
with digital art. I hope this is useful to you and I wish you and your
kids the best.
