I lead the FLOC New Technology Center in Washington DC. We are a teen
development center with a focus on multimedia. We design web pages with
Dreamweaver and Photoshop, create animation with Flash, create music with
Sonic Acid Music, and create video with iMovie and Final Cut Pro.
My advice is build in stages. Start with a core based on your budget and
skills and add on according to your budget and the energy of your
students. After three years our computer lab has expanded to include a
studio. The studio is our advanced setup and includes sound recording and
video editing stations.
Starter Kit
Digital Photography:Adobe Photoshop
Web Design: Macromedia Dreamweaver
Digital Music: Sonicfoundry Acid Music (This is by far our most popular
software and the easiest to use.)
Animation: Macromedia Flash
Digtal Camera: Some people like the Sony Mavica because it uses floppy
disks. We are happy with our kodak. It does not need to be an expensive
camera. Unless you want to print large images, 2 megapixels is fine.
We do all our video with Apple's imovie. I don't have any experience with
Windows based video editing but it would be hard to beat iMovie for power
and simplicity. A starter set up would be an iMac and an entry level
digital video camera; we use the Canon Ultura which has been replaced by
the ZR series. The iMac comes with the iMovie software and a digital jack
(firewire.) It gets more complicated (and expensive) if you want to do
analog video.
