Hello everyone, my name is Mical and I work for a non-profit after school
program called the Western Addition Beacon Center. The students we serve
attend one of the lowest peroforming middle schools, probably in the whole
state of California. I believe this is because our students are not
motivated to learn. And it is very hard for them to be focused on school
when racial tension is worsening and students are brining weapons to
school. In the midst of all of this negativity come 8 motivated students
in the Youth Leaders leadership program at the Western Addtion Beacon
Center who believe not only can they change the school, but change the
world. I would like to help these students get there by providing them
with opportunities to develop themselves as better leaders. Here is a
project idea I have:
I would like to take my students on a ten-day Civil Rights program in the
south where they would use a video diary to tape their experience meeting
Civil Rights leaders such as Martin King III, or Little Rock Nine's Minne
Jean Trickey, or Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, to name a few, and to witness
dramatic sites that have changed civil rights in this country and the
world. They tape their thought process of this trip and of the youth
around them. They would then edit this video diary to show to their
classrooms as a presentation for extra credit.
Only thing is I know very little about digital cameras and I have no funds
for such a program. I would like to know if anyone can help make their
video diary come alive to use in their classrooms to motivate their peers
and teachers.
I am in the process of writing my proposal for the Civil Rights movie
project that I would like to send to organizations that can help in
providing funding for this program. Please write back if any one would
like to help.
Thank you much for reading,
