hi teddie -

in terms of teaching multimedia to youth, i'm a big believer in
teaching some of the low-cost and free software tools that are available.
for windows, check out "multimedia builder," which has received strongly
favorable reviews in pc magazines.

i've heard good things about "swish," which creates flash files but
without having to learn flash. http://www.swishzone.com/

for the mac, it's worth teaching quicktime pro ($30 from apple), which
is very basic, but lets you do some neat multimedia storytelling. (see
http://storymakers.net/thanks/ for some examples.)

imovie 3 (free for mac) and movie maker 2 (for windows xp) are
definitely worth teaching.

i'd also teach GIMP for linux and mac os x (using x11). see
http://www.apple.com/macosx/x11/ GIMP is roughly equivalent to photoshop
and is entirely free. teach the drawing program in openoffice.org too.
(free)

teaching paint shop pro for windows is a good idea, too.

i'm a big fan of liveslideshow, which costs $50 for mac and windows.
http://www.liveslideshow.com here is a quicktime i made with
liveslideshow. http://storymakers.net/massey.mov this quicktime is
easily accessible to folks with dial-up internet accounts -- including
folks who have received donated computers.

            i hope this helps,

                    - phil shapiro
