Youth Leadership Grants, Awards, & Scholarships

Hi, everyone! There's a bunch of grant opportunities, awards, and
scholarships currently available for young people, honoring community
service and leadership potential. I've collected some of these resources
(mostly from The Foundation Center) for you below. Also, just to let you
know, the Young Leaders Program discussion mentioned in the last
newsletter has been delayed--we'll relay the details once it's
rescheduled. In the meantime, I hope that these resources give you
inspiration for cultivating youth leadership in your own communities.

YOUTH LEADERSHIP GRANTS, AWARDS, AND SCHOLARSHIPS
2003 YouthActionNet Awards
are given to "youth leaders and their emerging projects that promote
social change and connect youth with local communities." Recipients
receive $500 and the opportunity to share their project in an online
gallery. Deadlines: April 18, October 1.

Southern Poverty Law Center's Spring 2003 Mix It Up Grants Program
funds "youth-directed activist projects that focus on identifying,
crossing, and challenging social boundaries in schools and communities."
Grants are $250 each, and non-renewable. Deadline: Open.

Start Something Scholarship Program for Young People
presented by Target Stores and the Tiger Woods Foundation "helps build
qualities like initiative, leadership, and community stewardship." Upon
completing the program, youth may apply for scholarship awards from $100
to $5,000. Deadlines: May 1, September 1, January 1.

Third Wave Foundation Grants for Young Women and Their Organizations
"help young women activists make change in their lives and the lives of
others." Grants in the areas of Reproductive Health & Justice and
Organizing & Advocacy range from $100 to $5,000, and Scholarships range
from $1,000 to $5,000. Deadlines: April 1, October 1.

The Lemelson-MIT Program for Invention and Innovation
will "provide grant support to teams composed of students, their teachers,
and mentors from industry that are formed for the purpose of inventing
something of value for their schools or local communities." Up to 10
grants of $10,000 will be awarded. Deadline: May 9.

Kohl's Kids Who Care Volunteer Awards Program
recognizes young people who have made a difference in their community,
with an opportunity to receive $1,000 or $5,000 in scholarships.
Nominations due March 15.

The Harris Wofford Awards
"provide recognition to one individual and one institution that contribute
to 'Making service and service-learning the common expectation and common
experience of every young person in America.'" The individual award
recipient receives $1,000. Nominations due March 17.

Education Is Freedom National Scholarship Program
"focuses national attention and resources on students that have shown
academic promise and leadership." High school seniors and graduates up to
age 24 with financial need may apply for scholarships ranging from $500 to
$5,000. Deadline: March 15.

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Young Scholars Program
"selects highly able youth with financial need and provides them
throughout high school with individualized educational services that will
enable them to develop their talents and abilities." Students apply in
the spring of their 7th grade year. Deadline: May 1.

YouthLearn ( http://www.youthlearn.org ) brings together youth
professionals to share information on using technology to create
exciting learning environments. YouthLearn was created by the
Morino Institute ( http://www.morino.org ) and is now an Initiative
at Education Development Center ( http://www.edc.org ). We hope

lives and potential of young people.
