Toni,
Thank you for your email. The CA Dept. of Education (CDE) administers two 
different competitive grant-funded after school program opportunities - 
the After School Education & Safety (ASES) Program (formerly known as the 
Before and After School Safe Learning & Partnerships Program or B/ASLSNPP) 
and the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program (21st CCLC).  I 
can offer you a number of resources:
a. You can find information and updates about both of the state's programs 
on our web site at www.cde.ca.gov/afterschool/.  Both programs require an 
academic assistance component as well as an educational enrichment 
component. 
2. Please feel free to contact any of the B/ASLSNPP grantees to learn more 
about the programs and strategies they use. The list of grantees is 
available on our web site.  The 21st CCLC grants have not yet been 
released due to the state's budget crisis so there is not yet a listing of 
21st CCLC grantees on our web site. 
3. Please feel free to contact the regional lead for region 11 - Los 
Angeles County. Her name is Madeline Hall and she can be reached at (562) 
922-6112 or at Hall_Madeline at lacoe.edu.  Madeline is particularly 
knowlegable about local after school programs and resources.  She is 
assisted by others in the region and can also put you in touch with one of 
the Regional Learning Centers (RLC)in Region 11. The Regional Learning 
Centers are after school programs that already have in place a number of 
exemplary promising practices for after school.  The RLCs provide 
mentoring and teaching opportunitites for other after school programs.
