SPRING 2003 TUTOR/MENTOR LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

Since May of 1994,  leaders, volunteers and partners of   tutor/mentor 
programs have gathered in Chicago every six months to share ideas, 
network, and look for ways to improve the quality of non-school and 
school-based tutoring and/or mentoring programs.

The next  conference will be held at Northeastern Illinois University in 
Chicago on June 5th and 6th, 2003.

Call for Presenters:

If you would like to volunteer to do a workshop at this conference, or 
host a display table to share what your organization does, please email

This conference is an opportunity for you to showcase what you do and to 
learn from others. If your organization has a program or process that you 
like others to know about this is your opportunity.  All workshop 
presentations will be described on the T/MC conference web site, with 
contact information for your organization. This remains in place for six 
months and serves as a low-cost form of public awareness for your 
organization and its services.

We are interested in receiving proposals for 90 minute workshops on the 
following subject areas:

design of tutor/mentor program
planning process/quality improvement
evaluation=20
recruitment, training and recognition of volunteers
marketing, fund raising, communications
recruitment and motivation of students
tutoring strategies
working effectively with schools and other neighborhood organizations
models of effective GEAR UP, TEEN REACH, or 21st Century Programs
examples of Service-Learning in a tutor/mentor environment
experiential learning strategies
arts/science/math strategies
college & career readiness strategies
strategies for building participation of teens in tutor/mentor programs
strategies mentoring youth to jobs and careers
examples of effective business leadership in mobilizing volunteers and 
resources for tutor/mentor programs
staff development and retention strategies
uses of technology in a tutor/mentor program
networking strategies that connect local programs with others around the 
country

In addition, we seek proposals for workshops that will help volunteers 
become more effective tutors and mentors, with practical tips that can be 
easily incorporated in a volunteer=B9s weekly routine.

Workshops should present practical ideas that help other program leaders 
build and strengthen their own programs with practical ideas and handouts 
that serve as blueprints for others to follow.  NOTE:  Businesses, 
universities and consulting organizations that teach these subjects to 
for-profit organizations are invited to share their  expertise and help 
tutor/mentor programs make life brighter for at-risk children and youth.

This is a grassroots conference.    Each year dozens of speakers and 
organizers donate their time so that the fees for the conference can be 
kept under $100 for the two day event.  A continental breakfast and lunch 
will be provided each day.=20

One presenter for each workshop will receive a complementary admission to 
this conference.

the June Conference, please tell us of your interest in presenting a
