The goal of each Tutor/Mentor Leadership Conference is to share 
information options that help each individual tutor/mentor location in 
Chicago or any other city  become a better "business" of sustaining 
comprehensive, long-term volunteer-based tutoring and/or mentoring. The 
aim is to help youth succeed in school and be more successful in entering 
careers.  The focus is recruiting and training adult volunteers to become 
effective tutors/mentors who grow to become leaders and resource-builders 
in the lives of youth and communities. Each conference offers workshops on 
planning, evaluation, volunteer recruitment and training, marketing  and 
development, as well as specific topics related to tutoring and/or 
mentoring of youth at different age ranges.

Who should attend?  Tutor/mentor program leaders and volunteers. GEAR UP 
leaders and volunteers. Teen Reach and Service Learning Leaders and 
volunteers. Donors. Business leaders. Educators. Faith leaders. Anyone 
interested in helping youth move from poverty to careers.

Here are a few of the speakers who will be doing workshops:

Features of Successful Mentoring Programs.
This workshop will present recent research on mentoring and discusses 
practical applications for program planning and improvement.  Participants 
will learn empirically-supported best practices for program delivery. 
Presented by Thomas Keller, Ph.D. (University of Chicago) and David 
DuBois, Ph.D. (University of Illinois  at Chicago)

A Framework for Strategic Planning
This workshop will present the key elements of strategic planning and what 
an organization must consider before it formally enters into the planning 
process. Special emphasis will be placed on Board participation.

Milwaukee Mentors: A successful community collaboration of mentoring 
programs working together; from fundraising and corporate sponsorships to 
mentor recruitment and promotion.  Includes a description of three 
participating programs and how they differ from each other.
Presenters: Sarah Frank, Program Director, Milwaukee Mentors, Maggie 
Broeren, Executive Director, Our Next Generation and Nancy Hahn, Program 
Supervisor, New Concept Self Development Center, Inc.

Use of on-line and paper-and-pencil journaling to inform, improve, and 
evaluate tutor/mentor programs 
The workshop will provide illustrations of how on-line journalizing can be 
used to capture both the evidential data and the evocative stories that 
point to program success; then train participants in creating customized 
designs for their specific programs for either on-line or paper-and-pencil 
applications.

Alumni Recruitment: Mobilizing College Alumni
This workshop is for individuals and organizations interested in 
developing meaningful volunteer programs for college alumni groups or 
recruiting college alumni as volunteers for existing programs. 
Participants will learn strategies for recruiting volunteers and matching 
their talents and interests with volunteer positions. 
Presented by Carolyn Kessler, Executive Director, Princeton in Chicago 
Schools

<p>The two-day conference will offer more than 20 workshops like these each 
day.  The conference also offers opportunities for organizations to 
distribute handouts, host display tables, or advertise in the Program 
Book. A Thursday, June 5th 4:30 to 6pm reception will offer extra time for 
networking and sharing of information.
