ESSAY COMPETITION
Awards: $1,000, $500, $300, $200
Plus travel expenses to attend a winners' luncheon hosted by Senator Glenn
in Washington, D.C. in May 2004 Topic-What is the Essence of Excellent
Leadership? Leadership has never been more important. Governments,
businesses, nonprofit organizations, and international alliances all seek
excellent leaders. Citizens and employees express disappointment in their
current leaders. Ethical failures of leadership make headlines daily. What
makes an excellent leader? Are these leaders born or can they be trained?
Does the essence of excellence in leadership vary between the public and
private sectors? Is one type of leadership effective on the local level
while another is needed for global politics? Are different styles of
leadership effective or are there essentials of leadership that all
leaders must embrace? Does history offer useful examples of excellent
leadership? Do other disciplines, like psychology, economics, political
science, or management science, inform our concepts of leadership? Is
leadership changing with globalization, new technologies, or other trends?
How can we develop the most effective leaders for the next generation? The
John Glenn Institute for Public Service and Public Policy and the School
of Public Policy and Management at The Ohio State University invite
college students worldwide to explore these issues through a public policy
essay competition. Who is Eligible? Students must be full-time college
juniors or seniors in accredited U.S. colleges or universities as of
January 15, 2004. What is the Content of the Essay? Students should write
a 1,500-word essay addressing the topic question (What is the Essence of
Excellent Leadership?); the other questions outlined above are an aid to
thought. The essay may center around one or more of these questions--or
around a different question related to the essence of excellent
leadership. SUBMISSION DEADLINE: MARCH 15, 2004
