Hi Valerie & YLers

The magazine I work for, New Moon: The Magazine for Girls and Their Dreams
(www.newmoon.org) was founded 11 years ago as an alternative to mainstream
magazines. It was the first and only international magazine to be edited
and written by and for girls rather than adults. The Girls Editorial Board
(GEB) members range in the ages of 8-14, which is also the target market
of the magazine, and made the decision to not have advertising in the
magazine due to the harmful ways ads can affect girls. It's more than 80%
written by girls and is an excellent example of media truly about their
identity.

This is the 5th year that the GEB will publish the "25 Beautiful Girls"
issue of New Moon, which they began publishing in protest to PEOPLE
magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People" issue. New Moon's annual May/June
issue recognizes girls for their accomplishments and inner-beauty rather
than their outer looks. This annual issue spurred the development of the
Turn Beauty Inside Out Campaign (TBIO), which tries to make a change
within a media segment.

TBIO's focus last year was analyzing and changing the way girls and women
are portrayed in advertising. The GEB and other girls met with advertising
executives in New York and came up with guidelines for advertising to
girls. The girls who attended last year's TBIO Leadership event also came
up with an action called "GirlCaught", which you could incorporate into
your curriculum. Find out more about GirlCaught and TBIO at www.tbio.org
