POSITION DESCRIPTION
COMPUTER LEARNING CENTER DIRECTOR
Executive Summary
Perry School Community Services Center, Inc. was founded
in 1991 by residents of communities in the North Capitol St. area of
Washington, D.C. to create and operate the Perry School Community Services
Center to address conditions of chronic poverty in those communities. As
its mission, PSCSC, Inc., through a collaborative, comprehensive and
integrated approach to social services, economic empowerment and youth
development, eradicates poverty, its causes, and consequences, resulting
in positive outcomes for youth, adults and families within a service area
established by the Board of nine census tracts in the North Capitol St.
area with approximately 20,000 people including 5,100 youth 19 years of
age and under. In addition to managing the Perry Center, PSCSC, Inc.
provides services in youth development, social services and economic
empowerment. PSCSC, Inc. seeks a director of its computer learning center
to operate and manage the center as a full community technology center
that develops and advances the computer knowledge, academic proficiency
and marketable skills of youth and adults to carryout PSCSC, Inc.'s
mission and strategic plan.
Background
Studies by the Urban Institute and D.C. Government in the
mid-1980s revealed that the local community had high percentages of
welfare dependency, unemployment, school dropouts, juvenile delinquency
and single parent families and was considered chronically poor. Other
poverty-related conditions exist. In response the community created the
Perry Center, the most comprehensive human services center in D.C., with
11 autonomous but collaborating organizations providing a continuum of
human services from prenatal care to elderly assistance. A majority of
the Board members reside in the service area. To take advantage of
service opportunities and to fill gaps in services, PSCSC, Inc. provides
services in youth development, social services and economic empowerment.
Position - Specific Challenges
The Computer Learning Center Director reports to the
Director and Deputy Director of Youth Development and has prime
responsibility for developing and sustaining PSCSC, Inc.'s computer
learning center as a full community technology center fostering computer
proficiency, academic achievement and marketable skills of youth and
adults.
In program development and administration, the Computer Learning Center
Director will:
Ø Ensure that the computer learning center is a high quality and fully
functioning community technology center fostering the technical knowledge,
academic capability and marketable skills of youth and adults, carrying
out PSCSC, Inc.'s mission and strategic plan
Ø Manage and oversee the selection, maintenance and operation of
state-of-the-art hardware and software to carry out the functions of the
center. Maintain a current inventory of hardware, software, furniture and
equipment in the computer learning center.
Ø Design and implement curricula, schedules, workshops, and projects to
foster the computer knowledge, academic capability and skills of youth and
adults. Candidates should submit examples of curricula and projects they
have created and implemented.
Ø Supervise paid staff, consultants and volunteers working in the Computer
Learning Center and collaborate with any technology consultants for the
Perry Center
Ø Be knowledgeable about and apply new developments and promising
practices in computer hardware, software and programs that enhance the
educational capability of the Computer Learning Center
Ø Have personal computer skills to be able to teach and offer appropriate
certificates to youth and adults
Ø Ensure that the Computer Learning Center is an integral part of PSCSC,
Inc.'s youth development and economic empowerment systems
Ø Assist the Executive Director and Director of Youth Development in
securing financial, technical, personnel and other resources to sustain
and expand the programs of the Computer Learning Center
Qualifications
Ø BA or BS degree preferably with a major in computer science or related
technological field.
Ø Extensive knowledge of, and experience with, computer hardware,
including IBM, Dell, MacIntosh and the application of interactive software
to youth and adult education
Ø At least three years experience in managing a computer learning center,
developing curricula and lesson plans, supervising staff, and fostering
the education and skills of youth and adults
Ø Have A+ and C++ computer certifications
Ø Skills and commitment to build a team approach to learning and staffing
and lead effective staff and volunteer development and training
Ø Relationship management skills and commitment to foster collaboration
and cultivate and maintain good relations with youth, adults, colleagues,
collaborators, staff, volunteers, funders and Board members
Ø Creativity in designing and implementing education programs for youth
and adults with learning difficulties.
Ø PSCSC, Inc. is especially interested in qualified applicants residing in
the North Capitol St., area of Washington, D.C.

Salary is competitive for similar positions and responsibilities
