Chicago Lawyers Doing Good!
Dan Cotter, President of the Young Lawyers Section of the Chicago Bar
Association is a big guy with a big heart. On Saturday, May 8, 2004, Dan
is competing in the 22nd Annual Viking Open. The competition is a
powerlifting meet, and the total weight lifted is computed by adding
together the highest lift in each of the 3 lifts: 1) squat, 2) bench and
3) deadlift. For each of the three lifts, each lifter has 3 chances to
successfully complete the exercise using the weight of his or her choice.
The meet itself is not a fundraiser, but Dan decided to combine his bar
involvement and hobby to create a somewhat unique fundraising idea.
It works like any other pledge - make a pledge by the pound (or a flat
pledge amount); after the meet, Dan will report his total weight lifted in
pounds and, if you pledge by the pound, will round the pledge amount to
the nearest dollar and notify you of the amount due. All money raised
will be given to The Chicago Bar Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, and
all checks should be made payable to the Chicago Bar Foundation. The Bar
Foundation will then direct the money to the Lend-A-Hand
program.)www.lend-a-hand-net, which awards this money as grants to
one-on-one tutor/mentor programs in Chicago. If you are interested in
making a pledge, email Dan at DCotter at unitrin.com
Heroes in the Legal and Corporate Community who Have Mentored Young People
The Chicago Bar Association's Lend-A-Hand Program (http://www.lend-a-hand.net) will hold its First Appreciation Luncheon at the Chicago Bar Association
on June 3, 2004. Chicago area programs are encouraged to nominate unsung
heroes in the legal and corporate community who have mentored young
people.
Karina Ayala, Executive Director of the LEND A HAND program will do a
workshop to explain 2004 Grants, and the Lend-a-Hand Program at the
Tutor/Mentor Leadership Conference, on Tuesday, May 18th. Even if you're
not from Chicago, you should attend to see how you can duplicate this
program in your own city.
