NetDay, the national education technology nonprofit, is pleased to
announce the release of our National Report on Speak Up Day for Students
2003, Voices and Views of Today's Tech-Savvy Students. The report is
available at www.NetDay.org and provides insights into what we learned
from the 210,000 K-12 students from all 50 states, DC, PR and Department
of Defense schools worldwide who shared their ideas on technology and
education last fall.

Did you know . . .

that 29% of students in K-3rd grade have their own email account (45% of
students in grades 4-6 and 79% of students in grades 7 - 12 do also),

that 81% of students told us that losing Internet access would impact both
their schoolwork and their personal lives,

that for 67% of the students polled, their #1 response to an assignment to
write a report is to do an Internet search - only 10% would visit the
library to find a book and only 5% would look in their textbook for
information,

97% of students in grades 7-12 believe that technology is important for
their education, and

54% of students in grades 7-12 know more of their friends IM screen names
than their home phone numbers.

Schools that participated in Speak Up Day for Students can also access
their own aggregated school data for free. The National Report was shared
with the US Department of Education to inform the development of the new
National Education Technology Plan and with members of Congress through a
bi-partisan Congressional Briefing on March 24. View the KidzOnline
webcast of that Briefing at http://www.netday.org/speakupday2003_report.htm.

In response to calls from teachers who told us "we want our own Speak Up
Day," NetDay is also pleased to announce a special Speak Up Day for
Teachers going on right now through May 7. Teachers can register their
school and take the survey at www.NetDaySpeakUp.org. The survey is only
10-15 minutes long and the national report from this effort will be shared
with the US Department of Education, US Department of Commerce, US
Congress and many state and federal agencies. Special outreach efforts
are underway to celebrate our nation's teachers on National Teacher Day on
May 4 through Speak Up Day events nationwide. So, spread the word -
teachers, its time to speak up about technology in education!
