Tutor/Mentor Connection NEWS UPDATE
Linking ideas, programs and people to help inner city kids. A Program of
Cabrini Connections.
On Friday, April 30 the front page headline of the Chicago Sun Times was
"Girl Gang Terrorizes South Side School". A full page story told about
the girl gang and how they had attacked a student in a classroom, right in
front of a teacher. However, the article did not tell the REST OF THE
STORY, about how the neighborhood has high levels of poverty, many poorly
performing schools and few non-school tutoring/mentoring programs that
might offer positive alternatives to involvement in gangs.
Thanks to the help of volunteers, the T/MC is able to show where this
story took place, illustrate the connection between gang involvement,
youth violence and poor schools, and point potential volunteers and donors
to organizations offering various forms of tutoring and/or mentoring in
this area. You can see that map at

Uses of GIS maps as part of an ongoing public awareness campaign intended
to connect volunteers and donors with tutor/mentor programs throughout the
Chicago region will be concept discussed during the May 17 and 18
Tutor/Mentor Leadership Conference at Richard J. Daley College in Chicago.
See the entire conference agenda at:

If you cannot come to Chicago, you can participate in the Leadership
eConference Overlay, May 14 and 19

The Tutor/Mentor Leadership Conference is made possible by the volunteer
contributions of more than 50 people who are offering workshops at Daley
College in Chicago and via the Internet, as well as others who create GIS
maps, and supply the technology that makes e-conferencing possible at a
minimal cost. Major donors are The John & Frances Beck Foundation and the
Chicago Public Schools.
If you would like to attend the conference, but need a reduced rate or
scholarship (FREE), please contact the Tutor/Mentor Connection at
