Hard Cover Celebrates 19 Years ÒOn the AirÓ
In Fall 2004, Community TV NetworkÕs award winning,
youth-produced cable access show Hard Cover began its
19th season! Currently, the Hard Cover staff is busy
canvassing city high schools, recruiting youth to
become the next generation of Hard Cover producers.
Part of this new generation of youth staff will be
comprised of student interns from Chicago-area high
schools.
Hard Cover is pleased to renew its relationships with
the Young WomenÕs Leadership Charter School (YWLCS)
and the Best Practice High School. Recently, three
women from YWLCS joined the Hard Cover crew, along
with seven teens from the Best Practice High School.
Together, these students will work on this season of
Hard Cover. They will produce television shows to air
over the next few months, while gaining valuable
training in media literacy, critical thinking, and
experience in video making technology.
CTVN is conducting a sponsorship drive in an effort to
garner support from the community. In the past, CTVN
has offered CTA passes and after school snacks to all
of our Hard Cover producers. However, the existing
budget does not allow for these incentives. For
information on how to donate or to become a corporate
sponsor of the television show Hard Cover, please
contact Tom Bailey at 773-278-8500. Hard Cover airs
Mondays at 5:00pm & Tuesdays 4:30pm on cable channel
CAN-TV 19.

CTVN'S KELVYN PARK H.S. PARTNERSHIP
Community TV Network has run youth job programs in
media arts for more than 27 years. ChicagoÕs First
Lady, Maggie Daley offers a youth job-training program
called After School Matters, which is now active at
hundreds of Chicago Public High Schools. CTVN has
partnered with After School Matters to offer our Model
Program in Digital Video Production to CPS students.
Students are employed for 10 weeks and are paid a
stipend for participating in the program. ÒThey earn,
while they learn real job skills,Ó said Dr. Virginia
Boyle, Program Director at CTVN.
This fall, CTVN instructors Frances Crenshaw and Gina
Telaroli are conducting the program for students at
Kelvyn Park High School in the Logan Square community.
It is so important that CTVN has a presence in Kelvyn
Park High School. CTVN has made its home in Logan
Square/ West Town/ and Humboldt Park area for 30
years. This is our neighborhood school - CTVN serves
this community, said Boyle. This fall, our student
apprentices at Kelvyn Park chose to create 3 short
videos: a documentary, a music video, and a narrative.
Students decide their own topics and form. We
encourage artistic expression and incorporate the
students individual talents in each group, said
Frances
Crenshaw. The music video group will write their own
music for a video on teen violence, while another
group will write and direct a short comedy about
friendships, love and the circle of life. The
documentary group is making
a video on the military draft. All the students work
together exploring and researching their topics. They
will present their final video projects at an ASM
showcase video screening celebration at Kelvyn Park
High School on December 6.

SISTERS AGAINST VIOLENCE 3 recently wrapped up the
late summer/early fall program for girls at CTVN. A
Saturday morning class brought a group of young women
out to learn videomaking and to produce a short video.
Sisters Against Violence 3 is comprised of girls ages
11-14 years old from the Juan Diego community center.
This group has produced the third installment of
CTVN's Sisters Against Violence program supported by
the Back of the Yards Neighborhood Council and Mayor
Daleys YouthNet Region 4, in conjunction with Voices
Against Violence. CTVN instructor Frances Crenshaw led
the girls through a series of discussions about the
types of violence plaguing their community. The girls
shared ideas about how to recognize and solve problems
of domestic violence, including emotional, sexual, and
physical abuse. They researched statistics and stories
about child abuse, and developed a short scenario
involving an abused girl. As they learned how to
operate video cameras, they shot their story on
digital video. The Sisters Against Violence 3
presented their final project at a screening luncheon
in November at West Side Tech.

Youth Visions for Stronger Neighborhoods:
Summer 04 Program Makes an Impact...
During the summer of 2004, 15 teenagers from the
Humboldt Park neighborhood came together to work on
the Youth Visions for Stronger Neighborhoods (YVSN)
project. These young people conducted research on
their schools and mapped out their community assets.
They learned how to use the software program
PowerPoint, which they combined with video production
skills to create a solution-based presentation.
On August 26, the YVSN project proposed a
solution to a Chicago Public School problem to a group
at a public event at the Logan Square YMCA. Armed with
their PowerPoint presentation, they outlined the need
to rewrite the Chicago Public Schools UDC (Uniform
Disciplinary Code). Youth Visions participant Tamaiah
Johnson said, I really enjoyed working on this
project. It changed my whole attitude about the
system. When I first came into this program, I felt
like I couldnt make a difference, but now that I have
learned the skills I need, I know that my voice and
visions can be heard. CTCNet and Learn & Serve
America funded the Youth Visions Project

PATHWAYS TO DEVELOPMENT programs serve foster children
and wards of the state by offering them access to free
activities and classes focused on the arts and
sciences. As a Pathways partner, CTVN hosts an
after-school video training class designed
specifically for Pathway students. With this training,
the students are encouraged to produce segments for
Hard Cover on topics of their choosing. This fall, the
Pathways crew is developing segments on the recent
presidential elections and also on the dangers of
spreading rumors. These will air on cable channel
CAN-TV 19 in December.
