UTEC is currently hiring for two new Americorps VISTA positions (one
focusing on fundraising/organizing special events and the other focusing
on youth development/youth organizing. Please feel free to forward the

position will be working in partnership with the GRIP project, an 
independent living program in Lowell for homeless young people. We are

OPEN VISTA POSITIONS:
1. Fundraising Americorps VISTA position: Unique opportunity
to gain firsthand experience in organizing various special event
fundraisers for a nonprofit youth organization in Lowell!

Agency Background: UTEC’s mission is to provide a safe-haven for the
youth of Lowell, Massachusetts (ages 13-23), operated by and for the
teens themselves and dedicated to youth development and grassroots
organizing. It accomplishes this mission through intensive street
outreach, youth-development programs that identify and build on young
people’s strengths, and opportunities for teens to become agents of
social change in the community and effective shapers of their own lives.
Our core values focus on peace, positivity, and empowerment. This
position will be working in partnership with the GRIP Project (through
Justice Resource Institute), a "by teens, for teens" independent living
program for homeless youth.

Job Responsibilities: The United Teen Equality Center (UTEC) and the
GRIP project, both located in Lowell, MA, are seeking to fill an
AmeriCorps VISTA position focusing on building capacity in our programs
through development work, particularly fundraising and organizing
special events. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone interested
in gaining firsthand experience and training in development work, while
also having the opportunity to develop direct youth work experience.

This person will be responsible for organizing special event fundraisers
(i.e. silent auctions, golf tournaments, donor breakfasts, etc.),
coordinating direct mail campaigns, and developing PR materials. The
person will be expected to work with and train teen leaders in all
aspects of their development work.

Qualifications: Ideal candidates will have a strong presence and sense
of confidence in working with our young people. Be extremely outgoing
and willing to learn. Sense of humor and emphasis on multiculturalism is
huge!

Compensation: Overall, this position is a great opportunity for someone
who wants to gain a unique experience coordinating and developing
special event fundraisers. Americorps VISTA members make a one year
commitment to Americorps. There is a bi-weekly stipend of $412, plus
basic health benefits and various trainings throughout the year. An
additional award of approximately $4,725 is also available upon
completion of one year's service. Basic health insurance also provided.

2. Youth Organizing/Youth Development VISTA position: Work
with young people in a multi-purpose youth center in Lowell, MA to build
social change through youth development and youth organizing work.

Job responsibilities: This position will help manage and supervise the
overall development of all youth development programming, specifically
focusing on cultural and creative arts programming for youth ages 13-20
in our Lowell youth organization. In terms of work within the youth
development department, the VISTA will help supervise all class
instructors, provide follow-up /goal setting with various teens,
facilitate development-focused workshops, and organize various
multicultural special events. In terms of the youth organizing work,
he/she will help supervise and mentor a group of young people with the
goal of creating a forum for youth-led systemic change that addresses
the root causes of social injustice. VISTAs will receive considerable
training and workshop/exchange opportunities! Unlike community service
or direct service projects, the organizing work will focus on learning
approaches and organizing strategies that will help them best develop
campaigns aimed at the root causes of social injustice. There will also
be an emphasis on organizing around health care issues identified by the
youth in this project.
