Text-messaging in education?The majority of our students who have cell phones, have prepaid phones. I don't think they would be able to afford the extra time to use these phones in the manner you are describing.
Also, parents often use cell phones as a type of discipline. If a child does not comply with home rules, etc. they lose their cell phones.
And, as always, there is the learning curve. Most of the teachers I know how to use their phones to make calls, but aren't up to text messaging yet.
Still, some great ideas.

Cell phone companies charge differently for text messages, some plans charge per text message. Rates for internet access also have a broad range. You might want to make sure that you aren't going to create a financial barrier for some students.
Other than that, I think you've got some great ideas going - I can certainly see my teen-agers getting into this type of assignment.
