WOFFORD AWARDS


WASHINGTON - (September 13, 2005) - A program of Youth Service America
(www.YSA.org), the Harris Wofford awards annually honor exceptional
individuals, institutions, and media figures who actively contribute to this
nation's spirit of service. The Harris Wofford Awards honor former Senator
Harris Wofford - one of our nation's greatest public servants -  and
recognize extraordinary achievements in three categories: Youth (ages 5-25),
Organization (nonprofit, corporate, foundation), and Media (organization or
individual).  Nominations will be accepted through October 12, 2005.


Sponsored by State Farm Companies Foundation(r), the Awards will be given at
the 17th Annual Service-Learning Conference in Philadelphia, PA on March
22-25, 2006. A selection committee comprised of distinguished leaders in the
service field is convened by Youth Service America to review nominations.
The recipient in the Youth category will receive a $500 award for
him/herself and a $500 award for the non-profit organization of his/her

About Harris Wofford:

A former U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania and CEO of the Corporation for
National and Community Service, Harris Wofford was named chairman of
America's Promise in January 2002.  Mr. Wofford, who also serves on the
boards of Youth Service America and the Points of Light Foundation, has
dedicated much of his life to the goal of making citizen service a common
expectation and experience for all Americans. 


Mr. Wofford played a key role in both crafting and working to pass the
trailblazing legislation that created AmeriCorps, the Learn and Serve
America program and the Corporation for National and Community Service. He
was an instrumental figure in organizing the Presidents' Summit for
America's Future in 1997, which established America's Promise.


After helping launch the Peace Corps, Mr. Wofford held the post of special
assistant to President John F. Kennedy, as well as chairman of the White
House Sub-Cabinet Group on Civil Rights from 1961 to 1962. He also served as
counsel for the U.S. Committee on Civil Rights and trustee to the Martin
Luther King, Jr. Center for Non-Violent Social Change. In the 1970s, Mr.
Wofford was president of Bryn Mawr College.


Youth Service America is a national nonprofit resource center that partners
with thousands of other organizations committed to strengthening the youth
