We use teen interns to run the drop in portion of our computer lab. They
have a lot of say on how the lab looks and is run. They do computer lab
orientations with the youth so they are really seen as the authority and
experts in the lab. We do pay them but there internships is only for one
year to give other girls a chance at those positions. We also used an open
process to hire them.
The interns have also started a publishing service for staff. So if any
staff needs a flyer or brochure made, they can give it to the interns to do.
They have designed t-shirts using the computer and program brochures for
staff. Their work is great and has helped to make our materials very youth
friendly.

Hello-
We hire youth assistants. We pay them for one day a week, although often
they are happy to be in 4-5 days a week helping the teachers. They are
recommended by the teachers.

hi all
We at egleston ymca are wanting to keep some eyes on the computer lab early
in the morning.
There is a teen that always seems to be in the lab early mornings, and we
think he would be a good person for a teen peer leader position.
Does anyone else have peer leaders?
How do you do it with and/or without money?
How did you approach it?
What suggestions do you have for making it work?
thanks.
matt
