Hey everybody,
I'm pleased to share with the Peace Tiles community a draft version
of a design guide for Peace Tiles Workshops (visit http://
www.peacetiles.net to download the guide). The purpose of this guide
is to assist educators, artists, and anyone else using the Peace
Tiles process to plan and carry out a wonderful Peace Tiles
experience. The guide covers the basics, from how to establish a
positive tone for the workshop to creating the tile to putting a
mural together. Filled wth vibrant images from many of our partners
over the last two years, this guide is a useful resource for anyone
looking for a dynamic approach to arts-based learning. The purpose of
the Peace Tiles Workshop Design Guide is to assist educators,
artists, parents - anyone who would like to host a Peace Tiles
workshop - to think through some of the critical elements of a
successful workshop. By the time you are ready to use this guide to
design your Peace Tiles experience, you should already be able to
answer several key questions about your workshop, for example:
* What topic will be addressed? In other words, what “theme”
will participants reflect on through their artwork?
* Who are our community partners? For example, will you solicit
materials from a local lumber yard?
* How will the tiles be used? Is the activity part of a larger
effort to engage your community or reach out to a global partner?
A Peace Tiles workshop can take anywhere from 2 hours to an entire
week; it all depends on how much work needs to be done as a group.
This guide is designed to demonstrate the key activities of a
workshop lasting about 3 hours.
A Peace Tiles workshop works best when it has a clear intention. To
date, the process has been used in a variety of ways, including:
* Group-building. Peace Tiles can be a great way to open or
close an event in which participants don’t know each other very well.
By being invited to take creative risks together and produce a work
of shared value, participants strengthen bonds among one another.
* Creative Learning. Peace Tiles are a great way to synthesize
learning in a fun, creative way. Students can be asked to create a
work of art that addresses a particular subject of enquiry and will
enjoy the opportunity to respond in a creative way.
* Therapy. Peace Tiles offers a safe, engaging creative mode of
self-expression around issues and experiences that can often be very
difficult to describe or discuss verbally.
* Skills-building. During a Peace Tiles workshop participants
learn to cooperate, communicate, and process ideas visually as well
as pick up skills in collage and mixed media techniques.
Organized in five easy-to-follow sections, the Peace Tiles Workshop
Guide will take you step-by-step through the nuts and bolts of a
successful Peace Tiles workshop. The guide also provides a sense of
the kind of preparation and materials that you will need to run an
effective workshop. [8pgs, color, 659k]
Let me know what you think - the guide is in draft form, so feedback
is welcome!
Peace, and stay strong,
lars
